As summer slowly fades into fall, the days are getting shorter, and the nights, of course, are getting longer. This means it’s that time of year when we start drinking red wine and feeling sentimental for, well… lots of things, really. And nothing goes better with red wine and nostalgia, than some good ole fashion bluesy, jazzy, smoky music concert films. Especially those from the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival, with it’s seemingly endless roster of epic performances by practically all of our favorite singers.
September is a time of reflection, so we invite you to crack open a bottle of red as you reflect on the past, and maybe even meditate on the future, with these mesmerising, melancholic (and yes, soulful) performances.
All the concert films are available in UK, IE, IT, BE, NL, FR, ES, PT, DE, AT, CH, DK, NO, FI, SE, and have teasers featured below.
In this intimate live concert filmed in Rio de Janeiro on November 2008, Canadian jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall gives one of her most captivating performances ever. Along with her orchestra and a full band, Krall reveals her love affair with bossa nova, which hits just the right tone with its distinctly breezy, bittersweet sound.
Roy Orbison: the man with the 10 octave voice. He sort of set the standard for how to sing about a broken heart while still keeping his cool. Shot in August 1982 for the American TV Series Austin City Limits, Roy sings some of his most memorable hits, including ”Only the Lonely”, “Crying”, “Leah”, and “Running Scared.” Don’t worry, he didn’t forget “Pretty Woman.”
Tina Turner gives two final concerts at the packed-to-the-gills Wembley Stadium in London, doing virtually every one of her hits, from “I Wanna Take You Higher” to “Simply The Best”. Tina is at the top of her game here, with her instantly recognizable smokey-smooth voice, and her relentless energy, leggy dance numbers and winning smile as she performs for tens of thousands of adoring fans will give you the almost-there feeling!
Shot at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 19, 1997, this concert features superb performances by the legendary vocalist and pianist Ray Charles, his orchestra, and of course, The Raelettes. Ray sings “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Georgia On My Mind”, “Busted”, “Shadows Of My Mind” and “Angelina”. This man has endless cool and serious soul.
Filmed at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, legendary crooner George Benson performs timeless hits like “Give Me The Night”, “In Your Eyes”, “Turn Your Love Around”, “Lady Love Me”, “Love X Love”and many more. He’s gonna leave things on a high note though, just in case you’ve gotten a little weepy and sentimental.
So hopefully we’ve inspired you to curl up on the couch—alone or with a special someone—order some takeout and a bottle of wine, and listen to some outstanding live music as you settle into fall… Kinda sounds cozy, huh?
