With Father’s Day having just come and gone, I figured it was a good time of year to take a look at anime’s best dads. There are shockingly not a ton of anime dads; it’s kind of weird. This list is based off anime I have seen.

5. Musou Miyata (Keijo!!!!!!!!)

Musuo has a pretty stereotypical father figure/mentor character arc. His daughter, Sayaka, is a world class Judoka (Judo athlete). She abandons Judo in pursuit of Keijo. He’s hurt that she’d abandon the art and does not approve of her becoming a Keijo player. *Spoiler* It isn’t until the final episodes when he sees her compete that he has a change of heart and accepts her as a Keijo player.

4.  Keiji (Space Patrol Luluco)

Keiji is a freaking great father. He is funny, supportive, protective, and has god-like patience. Keiji is a single father and supports Luluco through his job at the Space Patrol. He teaches her a great sense of justice, and deeply cares about her mental and emotional state. Keiji does everything he can for Luluco, even when he’s frozen and missing half a brain.

3. Barazō Mankanshoku (Kill La Kill)

An all-around great dad. Relentlessly supports and encourages his daughter, Mako, even to the point where he stands up to the government for her. More than that, he works hard to support his family and even welcomes Ryuko into his home, treating her as his own.

2. Iwakura Yasuo (Serial Experiments Lain)

Say what you will about the LSD trip that is Serial Experiments Lain, from the first episode to the last, Lain has a tremendously supportive surrogate father. Yasuo helps Lain set up her first computer (NAVI) and get access to the Wired. He worries about her emotional and mental health and offers sage wisdom to his growing teenage daughter. Yasuo is everything a great dad should be. And thank god he is, because her mother is deserving of every four-letter word ever conceived.

1. Piccolo (Dragon Ball Z (DBZ))

Is Piccolo really Gohan’s dad? No, but he’s the greatest step-dad in anime history. Let me lay this out for you. In the first season of DBZ, Piccolo and Goku are enemies and only team up to defeat Raditz. *27-year-old Spoiler * After killing Goku and Raditz, Piccolo adopts Gohan, trains him and raises him. Even later in the series, Piccolo is constantly protecting Gohan, and even dies in the process. Piccolo is an amazing father, unlike…

Last Place: Goku

Is Goku really last place? No, but he’s damn close. As bad*ss as Goku is, he is a terrible dad. He’s constantly taking Gohan away from his studies. In Gohan’s first 17 years in life, Goku is dead/gone for nine of them. Hell, he knocks up Chi-Chi, damn near immediately dies, and misses Goten’s first seven years.

Which dads are your favorite and which ones did we miss? Let us know below!
