Can you believe it’s been 15 years since the PreCure franchise began? And every year, it just gets bigger! To make room for all the new magical girls, Toei has had to start focusing only on recent seasons in the team-up films. But if you’re missing Cure Black and Cure White, we have good news: they’re coming back this fall!
We Have Max Heart
Back in 2004, the only Cures in town were Nagisa and Honoka — a.k.a. Cure Black and Cure White. The pair always worked as a team… in fact, they couldn’t even transform without each other!
They lasted for two seasons, before a new duo debuted in Futari wa PreCure Splash Star. And while Saki and Mai look, act, and sound a lot like their predecessors, it was fairly clear this was a “reboot” of sorts. Where the original pair hadn’t really had an overarching theme, Splash Star had ties to nature and water.
Then came Yes! PreCure 5 and things changed forever. Since then, almost without exception, the franchise renews every year. Nagisa and Honoka would show up for the annual team-up movies… but as time went on and the PreCure army grew, it became impossible to include everyone.
Recent “All-Stars” films have opted to only include the three most recent teams, which has given the stories a bit more breathing room. But Toei has announced that the standalone Hugtto! PreCure film this fall will also be a team-up… retro-style!
