Nintendo announced the New 2DS XL recently, a brand new iteration of the original 2DS design that will feature a larger screen, clamshell form, and great new reason to keep picking up new 3DS games as they come out. If you’re not so interested in the gimmicky 3D that the New 3DS XL and 3DS line in general push and just want to enjoy new and awesome games, the 2DS XL is for you. It will retail for $149.99 when it debuts on June 28, and it’s available for preorder.
But when you get your brand new 2DS XL, what games should you toss in the cart with it? If you’re just now adopting a Nintendo handheld (aside from the Switch), here are some excellent releases you can start with, and best of all, you don’t need to worry about 3D with any of these. Just grab and go!
Available June 28
You can snag this game as soon as you pick up the 2DS XL. It’ll have the Miss you’ve created going on a quest to save the world, peppered with fun traditional RPG mechanics and plenty of other silliness. If you enjoyed the weird and wacky Tomodachi Life, you’ll want to snap this one up quick. It looks like the same amount of zaniness has gone into its creation.
Available June 28
The first 2D platforming game in the Pikmin series is also the first DS entry for any iteration of the handheld, and using the touch screen you’ll guide Captain Olimar as he explores a brand new world rife with the adorable little creatures known as Pikmin. A new Pikmin entry has been a long time coming, and this isn’t the “mainline” entry we were waiting for, but it’s still worth checking out.
Pokémon Sun and Moon
The latest Pokémon entries are vastly improved from the previous iterations, and there’s a whole new world of Pokémon to collect and train. Either Sun or Moon are great choices, especially if you’ve skipped a few generations. Nothing can ever beat the classics, but these sure do come close. Revamped gym battles, Mega Pokémon, Z-Moves, and a slew of other changes make these some of the greatestPokémon games so far. And, you know, it’s like they say: Gotta catch ’em all!
Super Mario 3D Land
You’ve got to get this classic Mario platformer if you’re adopting one of the consoles for the first time, as it’s one of the best you can get for 3DS. If you’re a Mario fan this is great for clearing courses with friends, flying solo to beat your best times, and enjoying some good old-fashioned Mario time. There’s also a sequel for when you’ve beaten this one to death. And trust me, you’re going to spend a lot of time with this game, so that’s a very real possibility.
Fire Emblem: Awakening
If you love strategy games, you’ll have a field day with this Fire Emblem entry. It’s not the newest, technically, but it’s one of the best. It’s a turn-based role-playing game with plenty of intriguing characters that can not only aid you in battle, but they can get fall in love and get married! Rewarding and nuanced, it’s an excellent strategy game on its own, but memorable characters and narrative make it one of the best around, 3DS or not. You owe it to yourself to add this to your to-buy list.
Now, don’t take these entries as gospel. There’s a whole heaping helping of additional games out there that need your time and attention, like The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and so many others. But you should absolutely take them as suggestions.
