The Funimation film Your Name has quickly become one of the most successful and well reviewed Japanese animated movies ever. Before even being released in North America and Europe, it has already raked in over $300 million worldwide which makes it currently the highest grossing anime EVER. It currently has a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and they finally released the English language trailer late last year.
It’s only coming to select theaters in the US, so here’s what you need to know before you race out to get those tickets.
For those of you living under a rock, 2 complete strangers, living totally separate lives in two disparate locations, wake up in each other’s bodies.
Unlike other body swap movies, this is not a one-time occurrence. They continue to swap bodies back and forth, living each other’s lives. They get to know one another without ever actually meeting by leaving behind notes and messages for each other when they swap. They both begin to keep journals of what happens in the other person’s life so they can keep up on what happens when they are away. They do try to figure out how to correct all this swapping and get their lives back… But at the same time, they are building a seriously deep connection between each other.
The original premise for the film is based on a novel by Makato Shinkai (who is also the director of Your Name). He said that he found the inspiration for the story in a poem that is over a thousand years old by the poet Ono no Komachi. In the poem she describes a dream where she meets a lover and wakes up feeling sad that it was not reality.
For those of you who have seen it, who do you think lives the more appealing life?
Even more importantly, who would you want to swap bodies with, if you were able to choose???
