One of my favorite simulcasts here on Viewster is the series World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman. I consider it one of the more under appreciated series of the past season, and really do feel that more people should be watching it. Sure it has faults and flaws; it’s not always the prettiest series to look at and it’s absolutely drowning in common tropes but there is one thing this series has that no other series this season does: Shizuno Urushibara.
A whole host of female characters have been introduced this season but Shizuno Urushibara is easily my favorite out of them all. From the way she acts to the way she’s designed (just look at her dress from her previous life!), Shizuno is the character that makes this series worth watching every single week. If I had to describe her in one word, it would be ‘enchanting.’
Shizuno is a magic user in the same class as the main character, Moroha Haimura, and is connected to him via marriage in their past life together. In their previous incarnation, she was once a slave but was saved by Moroha and eventually joined together with him. In her present life she is from a rich family with a strong history but she’s not very happy despite her wealth and strong standing. Living with her brother, Shizuno gets to make very few decisions herself and it seems as though much of her life has already been decided upon by her family without her getting much say in how her future will play out.
What I love about Shizuno is that unlike the other girls in the series (particularly Satsuki), Shizuno is a quiet girl who seems as though her feelings for Moroha are much more deeply rooted in her heart and reality. Satsuki can lay the claim that she is Moroha’s sister and therefore much closer to him than Shizuno but in my eyes Shizuno should be the one to make that claim being that her love comes from respect for what he once was in his previous life and what he is capable of becoming in his current life.
Shizuno is deeply intelligent (which you might not realize if you were to just take her at face value as a constantly sleepy ditz) which attracts me to her even more. She’s rarely quick to act and is never afraid to dig deeper into an issue in order to discover the hidden truths that lie beneath the surface.
World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman has problems to be certain but so long as Shizuno is present I know that I won’t stop watching it.
