Steven Spielberg’s latest film, Ready Player One, is based on the 2011 book of the same name by Ernest Cline. For those of you unfamiliar with the story, it’s a giant homage to video games, movies, and music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
But most importantly, there’s quite a bit of anime included in there.
The movie hit theaters late last month (check the official trailer below in case you’ve been under a rock):
The OASIS was created by a guy who grew up in the 80s, so his virtual world is littered with pop-culture references from that era. And as any kid growing up in that era will tell you, anime was a huge part of it! Let’s take a look at the anime that made its way into the books and movie:
Swordfish II from Cowboy Bebop
It’s right on the poster! That red ship on the right? Fans mentioned it also made cameo in the film, although I seemed to have missed it…
Gundam from Mobile Suit Gundam
During the climactic battle against Mechagodzilla, Daito shows off some fancy moves inside RX-78-2 Gundam from 1979’s Mobile Suit Gundam. He chose his giant robot wisely.
Mach 5 from Speed Racer
In the opening race scene, you can see Mach 5 at the starting line. This is of course Speed Racer’s famous ride from the popular series from the 1960’s.
Kaneda’s Motorcycle from Akira
Art3mis can be seen looking badass on Kaneda’s iconic motorcycle from 1988’s Akira. I don’t remember seeing King Kong in Akira though… He wouldn’t stand a chance against Tetsuo.
Planet Doom from Voltron
The ending battle scene takes place on Planet Doom, which sounds like a reference to several 1980’s cartoons, but it comes from none other than Voltron! Planet Doom is where King Zarkon of the Drule Empire rules.
