For a series of games with the word ‘Final’ in the title, the Square Enix’s Final Fantasy franchise shows little sign of stopping anytime soon. There are 15 games in the primary series and a ton of spin-offs; it’s one of the most successful game franchises of all time.
FF crosses every genre from straight RPG to first-person shooter and even tower defense, rarely creating sequels or remakes, to keep things consistently exciting.
Is there another franchise that is as willing to change and be as flexible as this one? I think not.
I mean if you’ve played a Halo game or a Call of Duty game, then you basically know what all of those experiences will be like. However, each new Final Fantasy game comes with a new leveling system or combat mechanics. There are some mainstays among the series that are in every iteration; like swordplay, magic casters or folks with spiky hair. However, more so than most other game franchises, it has shown that it is not afraid to try new things.
I have not played all of the Final Fantasy games, but I have many favorite parts from various portions of the franchise. I loved the sphere leveling system from the tenth game. I even enjoyed playing Blitzball while several of my friends did not. Some of my favorite visuals are from the ninth and my favorite over all is definitely the seventh.
Sure, there’s no such thing as a perfect video game, but this franchise as a whole might come close. I want to know: What’s the best game of the series?
