The gaming gods must be having a party, and the party favors are ones you certainly won’t want to miss. The University of Utah just made gaming as high profile of a collegiate sport, as any.
The University of Utah already has a noteworthy (and by noteworthy I mean best in the country, according to The Princeton Review) video game development program and is now offering scholarships for gamers.
Yep, you read that right… And the competition is on another level. The university’s e-sports team will play Riot Games’, League of Legends and compete in Riot’s collegiate league, which is already super cool on its own.
This is undoubtedly putting e-sports on the map and with an endorsement like this one, the industry will only become more lucrative in the way of scholarships for the gaming obsessed. This incredible scholarship opportunity will be funded by the Entertainment Arts and Engineering department but more importantly the University of Utah is paving the way for e-sports to become a more natural part of university athletic departments. While the University of Utah has big time money in its athletic department, this program strangely isn’t funded by the university’s athletic department.
Right now partial scholarships are being given to gamers but as this program grows, full scholarships will be awarded to as many as 35 gamers. There are a few smaller institutions that also have programs for gamers. In fact the University of California, Irvine has an e-sports arena on their campus.
If you are a gamer, opportunity might be calling! So game harder, friends.
