It’s a great big Go Nagai year for fans! Mazinger Z is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year, and lots of new projects herald the occasion. There have been new manga and even giant action figures. But the big event is just around the corner: a new anime film!

The Story of Mazinger Z

(Source: GiantBomb.com)

Mazinger Z and its cohorts have had a few variants on their origin story, but the basic idea remains the same. Orphaned rebel Koji Kabuto is called to his grandfather’s house one day, but arrives a little too late. The lab has been trashed by monsters, and Dr. Kabuto is on his last legs. But he leaves Koji with one final gift: Mazinger Z, a magnificent robot made of Super Alloy Z. Koji’s grandfather also notes that the robot can help anyone become a demon (ma) or a god (jin) depending on how it’s used — hence its name.

Unfortunately for Koji, he’ll need to learn to use Mazinger Z fast. Dr. Kabuto’s old associate and rival, the evil Dr. Hell (yes, that’s his real name), has raised an army of bizarre generals to help him steal Mazinger and gain access to the lab’s supply of Super Alloy Z. With the help of Professor Yumi, his daughter Sayaka, and the local bully Boss, Koji fights the monsters for the safety of Japan.

You can watch a modern spin on the story right here at Viewster, too! Mazinger Edition Z: The Impact! tells a new version of Koji’s origin story, intertwined with characters from other Go Nagai series.

Prepare for Infinity

So what’s next? Mazinger Z / Infinity just launched its first long-form trailer, and it looks like a lot has changed since the last time we saw Koji and company:

For one, it seems Sayaka is now in charge of her father’s lab. Considering other sources have shown he is now Prime Minister, that does make sense. Also, Koji’s kid brother Shiro has grown up quite a bit. But one thing absolutely hasn’t changed: Dr. Hell is here to, well, raise hell. And a few brief glimpses of mecha make it look like his right and left hands, Baron Ashura and Count Brocken, are back as well.

Also back is legendary anison performer Ichiro Mizuki, singing an updated version of the show’s classic opening!

But there are still a lot of questions. What’s happened between the original story and the film? Who is the mysterious golden-eyed girl? And when did Nuke and Mucha start looking like real human beings?

All these questions will hopefully be answered when Mazinger Z / Infinity openes January 18th, 2018!
