We know your wounds are still healing after this year’s live-action take on Ghost in the Shell. Headed by Scarlett Johansson, the film sputtered at the box office. Despite the outcries of anime loyalists everywhere, it looks like the film may be in the running for an Academy Award.
According to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, GitS is on its shortlist for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. The body confirmed its list on Tuesday, with the live-action anime adaptation making the cut alongside six other films.
Right now, GitS is competing with titles like Bright, Darkest Hour, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I, Tonya, Wonder, and Victoria & Abdul. The Academy must choose between recreations of historical figures and visions of fantastical, otherworldly creatures for its next batch of makeup and hairstyling nominees… And honestly, we’re pretty torn on which would be the best pick (except I, Tonya… definitely not I, Tonya). Each of the films were selected after industry members nominated their top titles in response to viewing 10-minute clips of eligible films.
GitS definitely disappointed most die-hard fans of the franchise, but it was actually praised for its rich style within the film industry. The title even won a Hollywood Professional Award for color grading in November.
If you want to learn more about the live-action adaptation, you can read up on it here. The title has received multiple recreations since its hugely popular manga series was originally created by Masamune Shirow.
Fun Fact: Ghost in the Shell was also shortlisted for the Academy Awards’ Visual Effect prize, but it has since been eliminated.
