I had ridiculously little faith in this show before I started it, but sometimes anime surprises you. Clean Freak! (CF!) is a wonderfully ridiculous show. Despite the title having soccer in the forefront, it chooses to be an absurdist comedy that also has soccer. And I’m in love with it.

Our hero of the show is Aoyama-kun, a soccer savant with one drastic (and bizarre) weakness… he’s an extreme germaphobe. While ludicrous, it serves as the shows focal point. His germaphobia leads him to be a liability on defense but forces him to be agile on offense. But like I said, soccer takes a backseat to comedy, and thankfully, Aoyama-kun’s germaphobia isn’t the sole source for the show’s humor.

From the rival school’s captain who can’t stop showing his abs, to a towel-smelling subplot, I could not stop laughing. Even the end credits find a way to be funny.

With any comedy anime, I’m worried about the gags heading forward. But I think the split focus of sports/comedy helps the series.

It’s a great change of pace, honestly.

3.25/5
