Thanks to my hungering quest to find local places exuding Japanese culture, I think I’ve found one of the best places yet. Meet the Japanese Soul Food restaurant Omo, tucked away in Springfield, Missouri. Ramen shops in small-town USA are a bit of a rarity, so a taste of big city Japan made my day.
The food of a culture is always an inviting look into the lifestyle and perception of ones country. Ramen is uniquely something that will forever be associated with Japanese Animation culture thanks in part to a golden hair ninja we all know and love.
What’s Omo all about? Ramen, Bento and Curry; also damn fine Gyoza.
What makes this shop special – soooo many choices. You could have Japanese Udon noodles or the traditional ramen noodle (which may or may not be a yakisoba noodle). From here you move onto your choice of soup base, I personally went for the Miso Soup, but you got your choice of Pork, Shoe or Spicy. From there you can then choose your choice of main topping from pork belly, beef, toy or seafood.
Outside of the ramen dishes you of course have options such as curry, sushi or even bento styled meals. Best part is that they give you plenty of food to enjoy and take home. This makes me one happy camper and it is a good way to bring back some delectable treats. On top of the main dishes you of course have some pretty healthy choices for appetizers. Gyoza is a personal favorite, along side Egg rolls and Tempura.
It’s places like these that fill me with a sense of joy and accomplishment. Finding them is part of the fun, enjoying the spoils of that find is something else all together. If you ever find yourself in the middle of the country, stop by Omo’s.
