Only one creature can stand up to the likes of Godzilla. Mechagodzilla. Now, Toho Animation is bringing it back to battle against a whole planet full of monsters.

Earlier this month, Toho released the first of a future trilogy of films with a new take on the old boy, Godzilla: Kaiju Wakusei (or Monster Planet). In a distant future, after the human race left the earth long behind, they return to find a planet filled with monsters, ruled by the now ancient beast known as Godzilla. The main character is a young man that escaped the original monster attacks and has returned with a taste for vengeance.

Who knows when this film will hit North America, but it has become available in Japan. They’ve also released some information on the upcoming sequel in May of 2018. It will be called Godzilla: Kessen Kidō Zōshoku Toshi (or The City Mechanized for the Final Battle). Its poster definitely implies the return of Mechagodzilla, but it’s unclear how they’ll develop the monsters origins. (Originally, it was created by aliens to go toe-to-toe with Godzilla, then it was later re-produced by the humans to do the same thing.)

I do think it’s safe to say we’ll get to enjoy another epic throw down between these two behemoths. I’ll be honest that just the original anime film seemed like an exciting premise, but adding this classic mech monster is the perfect way to kick things up a notch.

Here’s to hoping they figure out a way to get these films to North America as soon as possible.
