Netflix ‘Death Note’ Westernized Adaptation: Scandalous??

Image Source: Netflix US & Canada

As you probably heard, Netflix is creating an original live-action of the internationally-adored manga Death Note.

What you may NOT have heard, was that they decided to set the movie in the United States, vs. the original, which is (as you’d expect) set in Japan.

After the great controversy of casting Scarlett Johansson in Ghost In The Shell, and thereby forgoing an Asian actress for the big screen… I was quite surprised to see this unveiling. Even I (who admittedly loves Scarlett, western culture, and ‘MURICA) have to admit, this latest westernization decision rubs me the wrong way.

The U.S. anime and manga audience is a seriously growing market: but why do we love it so much? Is it the storyline, or the taste of a culture so different than our own? Opting for a westernized scene takes serious appeal out of the plot line for me… The trailer itself looks like just another “teen drama”, with a fancy scroll.

Am I just turning into a grumpy old man, or is this an epic fail like I think it is?? Feedback I found on Honey’s Anime suggests it’s going to be a rowdy sh*t show of angry fans…

Sound off below!
