Netflix dropped a recent bomb – they’re getting serious with the anime!
They have 12 originals scheduled in next year’s lineup. Here’s the list, along with a quick plot synopsis:
1. Devilman Crybaby
In this classic anime revival, Akira Fudo’s best friend talks him into becoming a half-demon to fight off other demons. Man, what a jerk. Here’s the official trailer:
2. Cannon Busters
A happy-go-lucky friendship droid meets a quirky repair droid and grumpy fugitive. The three go searching for the heir of a powerful kingdom which is being invaded.
3. B: The Beginning
Cremona is a world filled with futuristic technology. Hero Koku and famous policeman Keith set out to capture a serial killer, Killer B, and an underground criminal organization.
4. Sword Gai: the Animation
Gai is a guy who killed loads of people with his sword, and so the sword become a part of him. Now he’s gotta cope with being a living weapon and an organization that wants to end him, which sucks for Gai.
5. Lost Song
A fantasy tale about Rin, a happy young girl who lives with her dad, and Finis, who lives in solitude. They both wield the power of song – which heals wounds and can control wind and water. As their country faces war, their paths cross.
6. A.I.C.O. Incarnation
In 2035, an accident in Japan called the “Burst” results in an artificial intelligence called “Matter”. Two years later, high-school student Aiko learns a secret about herself from Yuya that may explain why the Burst happened. Now they’re off to the “Primary Point” for answers.
7. Rilakkuma Series
Rilakkuma has been around for nearly 15 years on stickers, clothing, lunch pails, and toys. Now the lovable bear and his pals are getting their own stop-motion animated series. This ones for the kiddos, I imagine.
8. Knights of the Zodiac: SAINT SEIYA
Modern day teenage adventurers protect the goddess Athena with their specialty armor representing signs from the zodiac. They battle Olympian gods who want to wipe humanity out, because Greek gods ARE kinda assholes.
9. Children of the Whales
In a sand-covered world, 513 people live on a ship called the “Mud Whale”. Everyone thinks the world is pretty much dead, but one day an archivist meets a young woman, proving there’s something else out there.
This is a story about gambling, but uses the game to take a long, hard look at the structures and consequences of a capitalistic society. Oh, and Kakegurui means “compulsive gambler”.
Baki Hanma lives in the shadow of his father, the strongest fighter in the world. While he trains hard to change that, five undefeated death-row inmates decide to take Baki on – because, y’know, they’re bored.
Epic tale of the Heroic Spirits, a group of magi, and the stolen Holy Grail. Now factions prepare for a Holy Grail War, which means lots of heroic battles and tragic ends for countless heroes.
