Prepare for a New “Fate/” This Month!

Can you handle all the Fate spinoffs? There’s Fate/Stay Night, Unlimited Blade Works, Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, and all of the different games. Staying on top of the franchise’s iterations feels like a full-time job.

You might want to grab some overtime, because Fate/Apocrypha is right around the corner.

An Alternate Telling

Based on the light novel series by Yuuichirou Higashide, Fate/Apocrypha takes place in a parallel world to Fate/Stay Night. This version documents the battle between the Black and Red Factions. The Black Faction, made up of members of Yggdmillennia, currently possess the Greater Grail, and seceded from the Mage’s Association with it in their possession. The Red Faction, made up almost entirely of Mage Association Members, is off to get the Grail back.

Also part of the story is Ruler, who appears in Fate/Grand Order and Fate/Extella. Here, she serves as a standard-bearer summoned by the Grail to oversee the outcome of the Great Holy Grail War.

Can you still keep track? For people new to the Fate franchise, it can be difficult to keep up with all the characters and all of their different forms and titles, both within and between stories. And counting anime, manga, and games (including the upcoming film cycle), there are more than 30 iterations of the Fate universe! (And don’t even get us started on all the different versions of Saber.)

Keeping Track

So how is everything connected? Well, other than Fate/Stay night and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, each iteration of the story is best considered a slightly parallel universe that branches off from those two. It’s an example in fiction of the idea that each decision creates a new parallel world… and Fate does it a lot.

That said, how much will you need to know to appreciate Fate/Apocrypha? Well, if you want to be completely on top of things, you can start with Fate/Stay Night right now!
