It seems like every anime out there is getting a smartphone or browser game these days. New shows come hand in hand with an app. Classic series like Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Captain Tsubasa get retroactive attention. The latest on the list? Another reborn classic: Space Battleship Yamato.
Off to Outer Space…
For those out of the loop, Yamato came back in a big way in 2012. Space Battleship Yamato 2199 was originally released as a series of six theatrical films, later cut into a two-cour series. If you caught sight of Star Blazers 2199 making the rounds a while back, that was it. You might also remember there was a live-action film. In both cases, the new series brought back classic characters, added or changed others, and approached the beloved franchise from a new angle.
Now they’re at it again, with Japan currently in the midst of Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love. The new series of films picks up where the original left off. And if there was anything from the original that you didn’t get to see in 2199, you’ll probably see it here!
A Hero’s Record
For fans who want to get a little closer to the action, there’s hope! Yamato 2202: Hero’s Record is coming out soon for iOS and Android devices. Details on the app are few and far between for now, but they’ve promised some very cool stuff.
Like what, you ask? Well, as you can see in the images, new art of your favorite characters is being created just for the app. Plus, you’ll be able to collect, build and battle 3D spaceships. If you love the series but aren’t a very good tactician, there’s an Autoplay mode so you can still send your troops out to fight.
The app’s official website is now open and taking applications via email, Twitter, and LINE. Here’s hoping we get to travel with the crew of the Yamato very soon!
