Snack & Stream: Korokke (コロッケ)

Today’s snack and stream recipe is super common in Nara: Japan’s first permanent capital. Located less than an hour away from Kyoto and Osaka, it’s chalk full of historic treasures, some of Japan’s oldest temples, and korokke – the greatest snack of all time.

Korokke is a potato croquette coated in panko, deep fried (hell yes). The most popular variety is typically filled with beef… But in honor of National Grilled Cheese Day, it seemed fitting to opt for a recipe packed with ooey gooey cheese.

The basics:

• Mashed potatoes

• Your standard flour / egg / panko combination

• Onion

• Lots o’ cheese

Basically, you build a mashed potato patty, which you gently fill with onion and cheese. Then, you’ll coat each patty in flour, then egg, then panko. Deep fry them and bask in the glory of your cooking skills.
