Normally with these spotlight pieces I like to highlight an entire series or a specific episode that I feel is worth mentioning. This week though I want to highlight a character who is deserving of special praise and mention named Rin Tohsaka.
If you’ve already watched the episode 0 prequel of Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] you already know who she is (and if you haven’t watched it yet, go do so! Like right now!). However, Rin is more than just a raven haired beauty; Rin is the centerpiece of this adaptation and that’s why I’m talking about her today.
As some of you are aware, my first introduction to the Fate franchise came from the 2006 Studio Deen adaptation that many long standing fans of the franchise feel wasn’t particularly good. I disagree with that opinion as I feel that this particular adaptation was actually a very good series particularly because it was the first time that I met Rin and fell in love with her character. As much as I loved Rin in that adaptation though, it’s nothing compared to how much I love her as a character now thanks to the 2014 ufotable adaptation.
In the original adaptation, Rin Tohsaka was an amazing character however anyone with half a brain could tell you that her character was a little flat. From the very first time that she appeared on the screen to her final moments in the series, she was pretty one dimensional. While she eventually showed a little bit of depth towards the end, her time throughout that original series was mostly spent being a full on tsundere with no real personality beyond that.
In the hour long episode 0 prequel released this year though, we see more personality from Rin than we see in the entire run of the previous series. Within just a few minutes, Rin is presented as a much more believable and human character. She might be an accomplished mage but deep down inside, she’s really just an average girl with problems that befit her role: she has trouble waking up in the morning, she makes mistakes like showing up to school an hour early thanks to her clocks being wrong, she’s popular and respected at school but still has friends… Rin is the girl that everyone wanted to have in their lives growing up be it as a friend, neighbor, girlfriend or daughter. And we learn all of this from a single hour long episode!
Yes, it’s true that she has a fiercely proud and competitive side (as we saw from her first encounters with Archer after he was summoned) but that’s part of her charm. She’s not in the Holy Grail war simply to have some silly wish granted, she’s in it just to win and that’s something you have to admire on one level or another.
Rin Tohsaka is a character that I’ve loved ever since I first met her years ago and seeing the first episodes of Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] has only reinforced just how much I care for her and how badly I want to see her accomplish her goals and achieve victory and I’m confident that once you get a couple of episodes into the series, you’ll feel the same way.
Watch ‘Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works]
