It’s time to celebrate another birthday! This time the focus of our admiration and praise is Hajime Isayama—a name which should sound familiar to most of you out there, as Hajime is the author of a little series that might have crossed your field of vision at some point over the last decade called Attack on Titan. Mr. Isayama is more than just the person behind Attack on Titan though. Over the years he’s created other series which are well worth pointing out, all covered in our brief walkthrough of the life and career of Hajime Isayama.
Born in Oyama in 1986, Isayama’s manga career started in high school when he began submitting his works to contests. His real career began in 2006 however when he created and submitted the Attack on Titan manga to Weekly Shōnen Jump. The one shot was actually rejected by this particular department, as they found that they needed to tone down his story and art style in order for it to be more appropriate for the department. Luckily for all of us however, Isayama declined to do so and instead submitted his one shot to Weekly Shōnen Magazine.
Isayama kept at it after that and in 2008 two of his one shots titled Heart Break One and orz won awards (the Special Encougagement Award and Selected Work respectively). The success of these titles continued to push him forward until the year 2009 when his first serial began running in the monthly magazine Bessatsu Shōnen. This title, which we now all know as Attack on Titan, took off and hasn’t looked back since. In 2011 it was awarded the Shonen award at the 35th annual Kodansha Manga Awards and it currently boasts a circulation of over 52 million copies, showing absolutely no signs of stopping at any point in the near future.
What’s next for Isayama? That’s a very good question that we wish we had the answer to, but for now let us just enjoy the work that he’s created and wish him a very happy birthday with the sincere hope that there will be many more to come!
