The Top 5 Anime Mothers

This past weekend in the U.S. it was Mother’s Day, the special day when you set aside some time to remember how special and important a mom can be. Our mothers are often the reason we are still alive and mothers in anime are no different. All our favorite characters have mothers that kept them alive long enough to become our heroes. There are some bad-a** anime moms out there; here’s a list of 5 of the best mothers in anime.

Dragon Ball Z’s Chi-Chi

Goku and Gohan are constantly running off to battle earth-shatteringly powerful foes in order to save the world. Some might look at Chi-Chi as a real buzzkill because she is so often trying to hold them back and keep Gohan looking after his studies, but somebody has to be the grown-up. Goku is certainly cool, but I wouldn’t ask him for advice on anything other than punching. Gohan grows up to be a very intelligent young hero and that is thanks to Chi-Chi.

Fullmetal Alchemist’s Trisha Elric

Trisha Elric is a huge part of the Fullmetal Alchemist story even though she passes away very early into the series. She is, however, one of the primary reasons her sons set off on the quest that drives the entire series because they want to resurrect their mom. She stayed behind when their father left them and raised the two boys as best she could before her illness took her away. How many mothers can say they basically turned their sons into superheroes?

Pokemon’s Hanako “Delia Ketchum”

Delia is the mother of Ash Ketchum and she is his biggest supporter. After his father is out of the picture (I’m starting to see a pattern here), she raises Ash up to become the number one Pokemon trainer. She is very talented in her own right, having won beauty and cooking contests. Unlike Chi-Chi, Delia pushes her son towards his heroic pursuits and doesn’t care too much about getting to school on time. It’s clear that Ash got his competitive nature from his mother.
