For Viewster readers living in the United States, May 6th is the official Free Comic Book Day!
Never heard of this national holiday?
Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) started back in 2002 with Diamond Comic Distributors, the #1 comic book distributor in the US. Their plan was to lure people inside independent comic book stores and covert them into fans. The success of the program convinced many other companies to get involved. The number of participating stores across the nation has grown exponentially with most cities having at least one. Larger cities have dozens.
Free manga samplers
To sweeten this deal, sponsors offer deals on top of your free comic. Anime distributor VIZ Media is offering a pair of manga samplers with excerpts from several of their new series.
- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
- The Legend of Zelda: Legendary Edition – Ocarina of Time
- Boruto: Naruto Next Generation
- Dragon Ball Super
There are limited copies available, so show up early while supplies last.
Additionally, there are dozens of partnerships from US comic book companies, including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, and others. If you’re early enough you may walk away with quite the bag’o’schwag.
If you’ve been itching to get into manga and comic books, this is the perfect opportunity. The website even offers a page dedicated to newbie comic fans called Get Into Comics, which is full of tips on how to begin collecting comic books. You’ll find awesome info on the history of comics, a guide to formats and definitions, and (best of all) a guide to genres and categories. Don’t think this is only for western superhero comic books either, they include manga too!
Find a store
Please note that some stores are (foolishly) not participating in FCBD. Best to find one that is confirmed before you head out the door. Use the official Free Comic Book Day tool to find a participating store.
