Of Course ‘High School DxD Hero’ Is Censored: Here’s Why

HSDD returned after a nearly three-year break. And like most people, I was eagerly awaiting this show. So when that garish logo popped up time and time again, I wasn’t happy.

I don’t possess enough fingers or toes to make sense of why High School DxD Hero is censored.

(…ok, gut intuition says it’s to boost DVD and Blu-ray sales.)

But even so, HSDD relishes in the splendor of its nudity. The main character achieves his Balance Breaker by touching his high school president’s boobs for god’s sake. More than any series I’ve ever seen, HSDD tries so hard to put boobs on screen.

So naturally, I went looking for answers.

To be honest,  I only just started watching the HSDD series last year. That means I missed the airing of each episode in the first three seasons. If I had, I would have seen a censored stream, much like the current season of Hero is now. The thing is, we can’t blame FUNimation or Crunchyroll for this. Here’s FUNimation moderator SpacemanHardy –

During the simulcast, FUNimation and Crunchyroll only have access to the censored broadcast TV masters given to them by Japan. Contrary to popular belief, FUNimation and Crunchyroll DO NOT censor the show themselves; they can only use what the Japanese producers offer them in the meantime. They will eventually get the uncensored masters once it gets closer to the home video release, however, and around that time the streaming footage will be updated with the uncensored footage. Note that for free subscribers, ONLY the censored footage is available; you have to upgrade to a paid subscription in order to see the uncensored episodes.

SO, we can point our blame at Japanese channel AT-X—a premium cable TV option in Japan. In Japan, you have to pay for the channel to see the HSDD series as it airs. And when AT-X licenses it out for simulcasting, the anime must be censored. It’s only when the DVDs and Blu-rays are about to come out that an uncensored stream is released.

By my own estimation, most home video sets come out a few weeks after the season is over. So, probably 10 weeks from now.

Shockingly, the show’s MAL score has only dropped 0.02 points in 3 weeks. Maybe the plot is that important after all.
