We’re now about a quarter of the way through Your lie in April and things are heating up. Kaori has tricked Kousei into entering a piano competition and is helping him prepare by making him listen to recordings of himself playing and spending more time with him. At one point she even quotes Snoopy to encourage him to keep going with his practice (which is easily one of the funniest moments of the episode).
More importantly than that though, the love triangle developing between Kaori, Kousei and Tsubaki is getting more and more pronounced. The series has done a great job up to this point of very slowly revealing just how deeply these characters feel about each other. Tsubaki has always been there by Kousei’s side but now that Kaori is in the picture she’s not as needed anymore. She’s doing her best to hide her feelings by going out with another guy but even when she’s with him all she can talk about is Kousei.
Six episodes in however I already have nagging fears in the back of my mind; what about that time that Kaori spent in the hospital just a couple of episodes ago? When are we going to learn more about that and learn all about the troubles that are obviously plaging her body? Are we headed towards a tragic ending without knowing it?
Your lie in April challenges the viewer to ask these questions without ever letting the audience look away and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
