New Creator Prize: Paru Itagaki, BEASTARS

Paru Itagaki already took home this year’s Manga Taisho award and the Japan Media Arts Festival’s “New Face” prize. The newcomer rose to fame with BEASTARS, a slice-of-life manga that takes place in a world of carnivores and herbivores.

Special Prize: Tetsuya Chiba, Hinemosu-Notari-Nikki

If you’re a fan of classic manga, you’re probably already well aware of Tetsuya Chiba. The 79-year-old manga creator is the genius behind Ashita no Joe, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Hinemosu-Notari-Nikki was a hit among fans this year, and it’s Chiba’s first new release in 18 years.

There’s a lot to love in this year’s list of winners, and a lot of new titles on our reading list. Will you be checking any of them out?
