These 2 Secrets Will Boost Your Cosplay Game

These 2 Secrets Will Boost Your Cosplay Game

Sure, if we all had thousands of dollars to allocate toward cosplay magic, this article wouldn’t need to exist. But when it comes down to eating dinner or having an ultra baller cosplay… we’re going to choose both.

Taking kickass cosplay photos doesn’t require expensive camera gear… A scenic landscape… Or even a full costume.

Here are the 2 secrets for pro-status cosplay:

Choose Materials That Photograph Well

Cardboard is a fan favorite for low budget options, but since it’s 2D, it won’t translate well as a prop in photos. Instead, get foam assortments. Sill super inexpensive, foam is the universal savior of cosplay. After properly prepped, primed, and painted, foam can make a convincing piece of armor.

  • EVA foam (floor mats, yoga mats) is affordable, accessible, lightweight, and no doubt a favorite material in most armor workshops.
  • Craft foam, a thinner and even cheaper version of EVA foam, is another good alternative available in many retail stores.
  • Pink insulation foam is the ideal, shaped through carving and sanding to make larger, dimensional props.

Keep in mind, each of these types of foam require special glues; hot glue, for example, can hold together craft foam, but melts insulation foam. Consult an adhesive chart such as this one to find which adhesive best suits your project.

Master Photo Edits

Here’s the real secret no one is telling you – – – unless you’re at a high-end con, it’s going to be damn near impossible to convince yourself that creating a head-to-toe cosplay is worth the money… And even if you did, it’ll be even harder to locate and stage a photoshoot that’s as mesmerizing as professional cosplayers in the community like @VampyBitMe.

Aspiring cosplay pros are leveraging photo edits more and more frequently to achieve the look… But Photoshop software costs an arm and a leg, and let’s be real, none of us know how to use it.

Instead, opt for a full-service editing app that transforms your costume (AND background) in minutes, for less than the cost of the foam you’ll buy at Joann’s. The photo editing app Mendr is a fan favorite – – – it’s super easy to use, and take minutes for the final product.

So we teamed up with Mendr to offer our cosplayers a special promo – – – –

And trust us, you’re going to want to use it.

Download their app, then enter the code COSPLAY (she’s case sensitive) in the Promo code field for a $5 credit towards your edit.

Don’t forget to tag us in your pics! We’ll showcase our favorites on our site.
