Modern anime isn’t just about anime itself, but what comes after. A big title ends up with mobile games, movies, and — sometimes — stage shows. And we’re all for it. These “2.5D” performances are amazing pieces of entertainment!

The ever-increasing timelines of Puella Magi Madoka Magica are preparing for a run onstage. But you may be surprised which version it is!

Magia Record

Madoka Magica joined the world of mobile games with Magia Record, and the game’s contents changed the world of the anime forever. For starters, it introduced (as you’d expect) tons of new puella magi. Top of the list? Iroha Tamaki, a new pink-haired magical girl on the hunt for her missing sister, Ui. As it happens, Madoka has come to the exact same town in search of Homura.

The new game also introduces the concept of “doppels,” which allow magical girls to tap into their witch forms without actually getting fully corrupted. Think of it like their “ultimate”. The designs are super-cool… but also super creepy. Which is probably why we like them.

Special events have also brought in the high-powered “Holy Mami” and other alternate forms of our faves.

Taking The Stage

This expanded world will also be the source of the new Madoka Magica stage experience. Titled Magica Gaiden, it will retell the game’s Main Story arc.

There are a few heavy hitters behind the production already, too. The show is being directed by Takarazuka vet Akiko Kodama and sports a script by regular anime/stage writer Fumi Hatamasa.

As for the massive cast of magical girls? The casting director is tapping Keyakizaka46, one of Nigizaka46’s sister groups. We don’t know any specific casting news yet, but we’re sure it’s just around the corner since the show is in August.

Magica Gaiden will run at Tokyo’s Akasaka ACT Theater this month.

We can’t wait to see how the world of the game is brought to life onstage!
