When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace: Episode 8 Review

A few seasons ago there was another superhero series which I loved for the first few episodes called Samurai Flamenco. It was a cute series about a model who decides to become a crime fighter. At first it was very cute and fun; it had a nice slice of life feel to it that made me want to see where it was going to go in the future. Then around episode 7 or 8 though it betrayed its roots and went in an almost completely different direction that I didn’t care for in the least. Instead of having our hero just be an ordinary guy fighting ordinary crime it introduced aliens and a bigger plot which completely changed the tone of the series. Why am I telling you all this? Because When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace just did the exact same thing.

Up until this point, this has been a fun, slice of life series about high school kids having fun with superpowers. No explanation on why they had the powers, just them sharing a secret and trying to figure out what to do with them. It’s been fun, sweet and charming without a hint of any sinister motives or some kind of grand plot which would change the atmosphere. Sadly though that has all changed. With this episode the atmosphere is completely different as characters that we met earlier on have reappeared and are making their purpose known.

I’m not going to spoil too much here for those of you who haven’t seen this particular episode becuase I want people to make their own decisions on if this is a good direction or a bad direction for the series to go but needless to say I’m not a fan of this new direction.

One could argue that the lack of any bigger picture was a detriment to the series and that it needed a new boost. I disagree wholeheartedly with that. This has been a character driven story from the beginning and was getting along just fine without some kind of bigger picture clouding up the atmosphere. The characters were getting developed and the relationships were becoming murkier which was all the inspiration I needed week after week to keep going and enjoy myself.

Now with the inclusion of a fairy war, I fear that things are going to fall off the tracks in a hurry or at least will cause a stumble that the series will not be able to recover from in time for the finale at the end of December.

While I hope and I pray that I am wrong about this, When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace just lost a lot of the goodwill it had built up with me and it’s going to have to work very hard to earn it back.
